2022 Toyota Prius Nightshade Edition adds blacked out appearance to iconic hybrid

The 2022 Toyota Prius Nightshade Edition has finally broken cover and like the other vehicles with that version, it’s murdered-out in black. Available in both FWD and AWD flavors, the Prius Nightshade Edition will be available in three exterior colors: Midnight Black Metallic, Super White, and Silver Metallic. The Prius is the eleventh Toyota vehicle to add a Nightshade edition and the first hybrid to get the treatment.

Exterior design cues distinguishing the Nightshade Edition from your average Prius are black headlight accents, black side mirror covers, black door handles, a black spoiler, a black shark fin antenna, and black alloy wheels sized 17 inches for FWD models or 15 inches on AWD versions.

Moving inside, you get heated front seats with power adjustment, a heated steering wheel, and gloss black interior trim. Toyota appears to have based the Prius Nightshade Edition on the XLE trim. Additional standard features include a 7.0-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a JBL audio system, keyless entry/start, and two 4.2-inch instrument cluster displays. The standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 driver assistance suite includes forward collision warning, front automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and road sign detection. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard.

As with all Prius models, the 2022 Toyota Prius Nightshade Edition uses a 1.8-liter four-cylinder coupled to two or three electric motors depending on the drivetrain configuration, a nickel-metal-hydride or lithium-ion battery, and a planetary gear set. The total system output is 121 hp. In FWD guise, the Prius Nightshade is expected to get an EPA rating of 54/50/52 mpg city/highway/combined. AWD versions are lower at 51/47/49 mpg.
