To achieve the 0 to 60 mph claim of 3 seconds on the 2020 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1, the driver must initialize and use the truck’s launch control function. Except on the Hummer EV, it’s not called that.
Watts To Freedom, or WTF, is what GMC is calling the launch mode on the Hummer EV. It performs a variety of steps so that the truck can reach maximum acceleration.
Not only does the battery pack and motors prepare for the surge of electricity and performance needed, but the vehicle lowers 2 inches closer to the ground.
Inside, the system enables a “prelaunch countdown” which even plays “unique sounds through the Bose speakers.” Maybe it’s the theme song from Team America: World Police?
“Watts to Freedom unlocks the full potential of the propulsion system and puts all of its available power to the pavement,” said Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer. “It’s an all-encompassing experience unlike anything else — purpose-built for straight-line fun.”
In addition to the lowering and the sounds, the display counts down in the vehicle and shows you what steps you need to follow to engage the system.
According to Oppenheiser, “It’ll put a smile on your face every single time.”
