Volvo Car USA is recalling 413,151 model-year 2021–2025 vehicles after discovering that a software fault can disable the rear-view camera when drivers shift into reverse. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) filed the recall (25V-282) on April 30, 2025, following multiple reports of the “Camera is temporarily not available” message appearing on center displays.
The recall covers a wide swath of Volvo’s lineup equipped with the ICUP (Google-built-in infotainment) system, including:
S60 and V60 (sedan and wagon)
V60 Cross Country
S90 and V90 (sedan and wagon)
V90 Cross Country
XC40, XC60, XC90 SUVs
C40 electric crossover
Production dates span from October 14, 2020 (XC40) and June 1, 2021 (V90CC) through April 21, 2025 (V60CC), with newer software fixes already introduced on the assembly line for model year 2026.
Under certain conditions, a fault code may be triggered that prevents the backup camera image from displaying during any subsequent reverse maneuver in the same driving cycle. While traditional park-assist warnings and automatic braking remain active on equipped vehicles, losing the rear-view image could increase the risk of a backing collision.
Volvo first logged related customer reports in April 2021. After a meeting with NHTSA on March 24, 2025, the issue was elevated to Volvo’s Critical Concern Management Team on March 26. By April 30, the team confirmed a safety risk and initiated the recall process.
Dealers will install an updated infotainment software package at no cost to owners. Vehicles already built with the improved software in early 2025 are not affected. Owners who paid for a prior out-of-pocket fix may seek reimbursement through Volvo’s Customer Care Center at 1-800-458-1552 or via https://volvo.custhelp/app/homeV3.
Volvo will notify dealers immediately, and owner notification letters are slated to go out on June 24, 2025. Owners can also check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for recall status at www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.
