Toyota ditches ‘Prime’ moniker on RAV4

Toyota has announced updates to its RAV4 model, previously known as the RAV4 Prime, for the 2025 model year. The vehicle, now referred to as the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) or simply RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, will feature the same plug-in hybrid powertrain. This change aims to simplify the naming structure for consumers by better distinguishing powertrain options among the RAV4 lineup. Another notable update includes the removal of the blue “halo” from the Toyota logos on the front and rear of the vehicle.

The 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid will be available in SE and XSE grades. Standard features include heated front seats, Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Higher-end features, such as ventilated front seats and a power tilt/slide moonroof, will be available as options. The vehicle offers 33.5 cubic feet of cargo space, seating for five, and 8-inch ground clearance. Powered by a system that produces 302 horsepower, it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. The vehicle can operate on all-electric power for up to 42 miles and is available in a range of color options depending on the trim level.

The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid will come with several driving modes, including Electric Vehicle (EV), Hybrid Vehicle (HV), and Charge mode, allowing drivers to optimize the vehicle for different driving conditions. The AWD system enhances handling on both paved and unpaved roads, and the Predictive Efficient Drive system uses data to improve hybrid battery efficiency.

The 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid will also feature Toyota’s latest Audio Multimedia system, offering enhanced connectivity and voice-activated commands. Drivers can access Intelligent Assistant, Cloud Navigation, and other connected services through a subscription. The vehicle also comes equipped with standard safety features, including Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, which offers pre-collision detection, dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, and other advanced driver assistance technologies.

The 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is expected to arrive at Toyota dealerships in late 2024, with a starting price of $43,865 for the SE grade.
