Stellantis announces transition to J3400 connector for electric vehicles

Stellantis, has announced its plan to adopt the proposed SAE J3400 charging connector for its battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in North America, beginning with select models in the 2026 model year. This initiative aims to enhance electric vehicle charging options and is aligned with the company’s strategy to facilitate open and seamless charging solutions for its customers. The adoption of the J3400 connector marks a significant move towards standardizing charging infrastructure and improving user experience for electric vehicle owners.

To ensure a smooth transition for users with existing Combined Charging System (CCS) ports, Stellantis will provide adapters that allow these vehicles to access the expanding network of J3400 charging infrastructure. This approach is designed to meet the evolving J3400/1 standards, which are currently under development.

This announcement is part of Stellantis’s broader efforts to expand charging options for its customers, in line with the company’s Dare Forward 2030 strategy. One of the key goals of this strategy is to achieve carbon net-zero status by 2038. The company’s commitment to this vision is further illustrated by its involvement in the IONNA charging network joint venture. Together with six other major global automakers, Stellantis aims to install at least 30,000 high-powered charging points across urban and highway locations in North America by 2030. The IONNA network, which prioritizes renewable energy and high-powered charging capabilities, is expected to start rolling out its first charging stations in 2024.

Ricardo Stamatti, Stellantis’s SVP of global energy & charging, emphasized the benefits of industry alignment on open standards, highlighting the J3400 connector’s role in promoting interoperability and freedom of mobility. The joint venture’s charging stations will cater to all BEV customers, supporting both CCS and J3400 connectors natively, thereby enhancing the charging experience through digital integration, appealing locations, and various amenities.
