Rivian introduces second-generation R1S and R1T

Rivian has unveiled the second generation of its R1S SUV and R1T pickup, featuring numerous hardware improvements, performance upgrades, and a redesigned software experience. These vehicles maintain Rivian’s signature exterior design while introducing a new zonal electrical architecture and updated compute and autonomy platforms. The new models offer various motor configurations, design elements, and customization options.

The new R1 platform includes Rivian-designed and built Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor configurations, with the Quad-Motor R1T delivering 1,025 horsepower and accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds. The new Large and Max battery packs offer up to 420 miles of range, while a lithium iron phosphate-based Standard pack provides up to 270 miles. A redesigned heat pump-based thermal system and new 22-inch aero wheels enhance efficiency and range. The updated suspension and air springs improve the on-road ride without compromising off-road capability.

The vehicles feature a new electrical architecture that reduces the number of ECUs and the amount of wiring, enhancing efficiency. The Rivian Autonomy Platform, powered by multiple cameras, radars, and AI technology, offers advanced capabilities and safety features. New headlights with Adaptive Drive Beam technology and other safety enhancements are included.

Additional features include car keys in Apple Wallet, a Rivian-developed sound system with Dolby Atmos, and Connect+, a subscription service that supports streaming video and provides access to numerous apps. The interior includes a Dynamic Glass Roof, customizable lighting, and a redesigned user interface. Two new premium trims and new exterior paint and trim options are available.

Rivian’s commitment to sustainability is evident in the 15% lower carbon footprint of these vehicles compared to the previous generation. Manufacturing efficiencies and improvements in the materials supply chain contribute to this reduction. The second generation R1S starts at $75,900, and the R1T starts at $69,900, with production based in Normal, Illinois, and deliveries available immediately.
