Kia America has announced that it will begin offering North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters for its electric vehicle models, including the EV6 and EV9, in early 2025. The purpose of these adapters is to increase the number of charging options available to Kia electric vehicle owners across the United States.
Customers who purchase or lease a new 2024 or 2025 Kia EV9, or a 2024 EV6 on or after September 4, 2024, will be eligible to receive an NACS adapter at no additional cost. This adapter will allow them to connect to over 16,500 NACS DC fast chargers available throughout the U.S. Kia plans to distribute the free adapters to eligible customers in early 2025.
For Kia customers who own an EV6, EV9, or Niro EV purchased before September 4, 2024, the option to buy an NACS adapter will be provided through authorized Kia dealerships at a later date. Kia expects to enable access to the NACS DC fast charging network starting January 15, 2025.
Kia has confirmed that it will offer three different types of NACS adapters:
- The first adapter, known as NACS to CCS1, will enable current Kia electric vehicles to connect to DC fast chargers.
- The second adapter, CCS1 to NACS, will allow Kia EVs equipped with NACS ports to utilize existing CCS DC chargers.
- The third adapter, J1772 to NACS, will make it possible for NACS-equipped Kia EVs to charge using Level 2 chargers.
To facilitate charging convenience, Kia will also introduce a feature in early 2025 that allows EV owners to access and pay for charging services using the Kia Access app. This capability will be available once the vehicle’s software has been upgraded. The app will provide customers with the ability to search for charging stations, check their availability and status, and access pricing information, all from their vehicle’s infotainment screen or a compatible smartphone.
