It’s a real shame this mini supercar isn’t coming to the US

Renault has introduced the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, its most powerful and advanced road car to date, designed for rallying, drifting, and track performance while being adapted for road use. This electric model pays homage to the iconic Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2 from the 1980s, which were notable for their innovative turbocharged engines and rally achievements.

The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is characterized as a mini-supercar, featuring impressive specifications such as 540 horsepower, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in under 3.5 seconds, and a carbon superstructure. It has a minimum length/width ratio of 2.01, placing it in the same category as larger supercars, but within a more compact hot hatch format. Built on a custom platform, the vehicle aligns with Renault’s strategy of combining bold design with performance expertise, similar to past models like the Renault 5, Renault 5 Alpine, and Renault 5 Turbo.

The design of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E reflects its racing heritage, featuring a prominent bumper, rear wing extensions, and aerodynamic enhancements. The vehicle’s dimensions include a length of 4.08 meters, a width of 2.03 meters, and a height of 1.38 meters, with an extended wheelbase of 2.57 meters. The front design incorporates square LED headlights and a unique aerodynamic splitter to optimize performance.

The vehicle is a two-door, two-seater, housing 20-inch wheels equipped with in-wheel motors, contributing to a total weight of approximately 1,450 kilograms, including a 70 kWh battery. This configuration results in a power-to-weight ratio of 2.7 kg/hp, comparable to that of traditional supercars. The expected driving range is over 400 kilometers, with full AC charging taking around eight hours.

Performance capabilities include a top speed of 270 km/h and rapid DC fast charging at 350 kW, allowing for quick battery replenishment. The driving experience is enhanced with multiple modes, including options for sport and race driving, along with a drift-assist function.

Inside, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E features a sporty design with bucket seats, carbon components, and modern technology. The dashboard includes two OpenR screens for navigation and multimedia, integrating Google services for a connected driving experience.

Customization options will be available, allowing buyers to choose from various exterior and interior colors, including those reminiscent of the original models. A total of 1,980 units will be produced, paying tribute to the year the original Renault 5 Turbo was launched, with reservations expected to open soon and deliveries planned for 2027. The vehicle’s marketing approach will involve dealer participation in pre-financing, emphasizing a collaborative effort between Renault and its customers.
