IONNA, a joint venture with major automotive manufacturers such as BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota, has announced its transition from public beta to a full-scale national release. This announcement is marked by the opening of the first IONNA Rechargery in Apex, North Carolina, along with the establishment of its headquarters and Customer Experience Lab in Durham, North Carolina. The initiative aims to create a comprehensive charging network that is designed, engineered, and constructed in the United States.
Following an extensive testing phase in late 2024, which involved both automaker vehicle fleets and everyday drivers, IONNA’s network underwent rigorous evaluation. This phase included over 4,400 charging sessions across more than 80 vehicle models, resulting in the distribution of nearly 63,000 kilowatt-hours of energy. As a result, IONNA has refined its hardware, software, and overall customer experience, allowing it to proceed with its nationwide expansion.
Currently, IONNA has secured contracts for over 100 charging sites throughout the country. This includes the recent openings of new Rechargeries in Houston, Texas, and Abilene, Kansas, with additional locations, including Willcox, Arizona, also under construction. The headquarters and Customer Experience Lab will serve as a center for continuous testing and innovation, reinforcing the commitment to enhancing the driver experience.
IONNA’s initiative reflects a significant investment in American infrastructure and job creation. The plan includes the addition of over 1,000 charging bays in 2025, with a total of 30,000 bays expected to be constructed over the next five years. This expansion is intended to provide drivers with the necessary coverage and reliability while also creating new employment opportunities.
Starting in the first quarter of 2025 at the Garner, North Carolina location, IONNA plans to implement AI-powered computer vision and sensor fusion technology to facilitate automated retail offerings. This collaboration with Amazon will utilize their “Just Walk Out” technology, enabling drivers to access refreshments and essentials without the need for traditional checkout processes.
In 2025, IONNA aims to enhance interoperability and user convenience through the introduction of Plug & Charge technology, which is currently available and will expand to include a wider range of automakers. Additional features such as AI-driven smart reservations and in-car payments will further integrate the charging experience, positioning IONNA as a leader in the American charging network landscape.
