Finally, new 2025 Toyota 4Runner debuts with hybrid tech

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner introduces the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, marking a significant development in the vehicle’s performance capabilities. As part of Toyota’s latest generation of rugged off-road vehicles, the new 4Runner is built on the TNGA-F global truck platform, enhancing its strength, ride comfort, and handling. This model is constructed from the ground up, emphasizing its dynamic and durable design to maintain its status as a North American off-road icon. Scheduled for a fall 2024 release in the U.S., the 2025 model promises to blend traditional off-road capability with advanced technology and safety features.

The i-FORCE MAX hybrid system represents a leap forward in the 4Runner’s engine lineup, pairing a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission. This setup draws power from a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack, resulting in a total system output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. This configuration not only enhances the vehicle’s efficiency but also makes it the most powerful 4Runner model to date. The hybrid powertrain is available on the TRD Off-Road and Limited grades and comes standard on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum models.

Designed by the Michigan-based CALTY design team, the 2025 4Runner features a bold look that pays homage to its off-road heritage while incorporating modern and functional interior designs. The vehicle’s rugged exterior is inspired by Baja desert racing, with a high lift, lean body, and big tires that emphasize its go-anywhere purpose. Inside, the 4Runner offers a sophisticated and capable environment, including second-row tumble seats that enhance interior versatility.

Off-road capabilities are further supported by the Stabilizer Bar Disconnect Mechanism, improving suspension articulation, and the Multi-Terrain Monitor system, which aids navigation by displaying potential hazards. The vehicle also comes with a suite of driving aids including the newly quieter CRAWL Control function for low-speed off-road cruise control, enhancing the driver’s focus on steering through challenging terrain.

The introduction of the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain in the 2025 4Runner underscores Toyota’s commitment to offering powerful, efficient, and environmentally conscious options for off-road enthusiasts. With its blend of performance, technology, and safety, the new 4Runner model is poised to continue the legacy of Toyota’s storied off-road vehicle line.
