Chevrolet unveils Silverado EV ZR2 at Mint 400 race

Chevrolet has introduced the Silverado EV ZR2 off-road race truck concept at the Mint 400 off-road race, where it will compete as part of the Hall Racing team. This concept truck complements the existing Silverado ZR2 and Colorado ZR2 race trucks, with Chad Hall designated as the driver in the Open Production EV class.

Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet, stated, “There is no better proving ground to test the limits of our vehicles than competitive racing.” He emphasized that the Silverado EV ZR2 race truck concept utilizes 98% GM production parts, highlighting its capability to perform in demanding conditions such as those presented by the Mint 400.

The Silverado EV ZR2 race truck concept adheres to the established ZR2 design principles, featuring a lifted suspension with specialized off-road tuning, Multimatic damper technology, locking differentials, and underbody skid protection. The truck was developed in a short span of five months and incorporates prototype Multimatic Adaptive Spool Valve continuously adaptive dampers, which enhance its off-road performance and provide over 13 inches of wheel travel.

Equipped with 37-inch BF Goodrich KM3 Mud-Terrain tires and a tri-motor electric propulsion system generating 1,100 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque, the race truck is positioned to meet the demands of off-road racing.

Chevrolet engineers will collaborate with the Chad Hall Racing team to assess the race truck’s performance and durability, with insights gained expected to inform future production vehicles and performance parts. Currently, Chevrolet offers over 44 off-road performance parts and accessories for its production trucks.

Chad Hall, the primary driver and owner of Hall Racing, remarked, “Working with the Chevy engineers is always a good day at the office.” He noted that the insights gained from racing contribute to the development of consumer vehicles, stating that an event like the Mint 400 equates to extensive vehicle wear and tear.

Hall Racing began its competitive journey in 2017 with a Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, achieving a commendable record of finishing 53 out of 54 races entered.

The unveiling of the Silverado ZR2 race truck concept coincides with Chevrolet’s plans to launch the 2026 Silverado EV Trail Boss this summer, which will be the brand’s first off-road oriented electric vehicle. The Trail Boss variant will feature enhancements for off-road capability, including a factory-installed lift, 18-inch wheels, 35-inch all-terrain tires, and red tow hooks, along with a new Terrain Mode for improved maneuverability in confined spaces. Further details regarding the Silverado EV Trail Boss will be released in the near future.
