Lexus unveils the RZ: A new era for electric luxury vehicles

Lexus has unveiled the RZ, its new dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV), in Brussels, Belgium, with plans for a gradual rollout across various regions starting in fall 2025. The RZ represents Lexus’s ongoing commitment to electrification, which began with the RX 400h in 2005. As of 2024, electrified vehicles, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric models, will comprise 52% of Lexus’s lineup. The company aims to meet the diverse needs of customers while advancing towards a carbon-neutral future.

The RZ features a completely redesigned BEV system that enhances motor output, extends driving range, and reduces charging times. A notable innovation is the introduction of the next-generation Steer-by-Wire System, which aims to transform the driving experience. The vehicle’s platform improvements enhance driving performance, while the refined DIRECT4 all-wheel-drive system aims to improve handling and responsiveness. The RZ 550e F SPORT variant will offer higher-output motors, achieving a total system output of 300 kW. Additionally, an Interactive Manual Drive feature is included, which synchronizes acceleration and deceleration with sound to create a more engaging driving experience.

Inside, the vehicle features exclusive seating and aluminum pedals designed to enhance its sporty character. The RZ is crafted to accommodate a wide range of drivers, from those seeking practicality to those desiring a more dynamic driving experience.

Lexus International’s Chief Engineer, Shinya Ito, emphasized the brand’s dedication to refining electrification technologies to enhance driving enjoyment. Engineers at the Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama collaborate on testing under challenging conditions to refine vehicle performance. The introduction of the Steer-by-Wire system aims to optimize steering response, while the software-driven Interactive Manual Drive is designed to enhance the connection between the driver and the vehicle. Lexus plans to continue advancing its driving experience by integrating innovative hardware and software solutions.
