2026 Toyota bZ gains bigger battery and faster charging

Toyota today unveiled its 2026 bZ battery-electric SUV, featuring major upgrades in range, power and charging performance. The standout change is a new 74.7-kWh lithium-ion pack—available on XLE FWD Plus, XLE AWD and Limited models—that boosts EPA estimates to as much as 314 miles on a full charge. A 57.7-kWh battery remains standard on the base XLE FWD.

All 2026 bZs gain North American Charging System (NACS) ports for access to Tesla’s fast-charging network, plus Plug & Charge capability for seamless authentication at participating stations. Toyota says the bZ can recharge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes under ideal DC-fast-charge conditions.

Performance also jumps thanks to upgraded eAxles with silicon-carbide semiconductors: AWD models now deliver 338 combined horsepower—a 50% increase that cuts 0-60 mph to 4.9 seconds—while FWD versions rise to 221 hp. Toyota’s enhanced battery thermal management and a new battery pre-conditioning function aim to preserve fast-charge speeds in colder weather.

Styling tweaks refine the bZ’s distinctive front fascia, slim LED running lights and color-matched fender mouldings. Inside, the cabin gains a larger 14-inch multimedia touchscreen, two wireless smartphone chargers and customizable 64-color ambient lighting. The dashboard is slimmer, materials are softer to the touch and rear-seat space remains generous at 35.3 inches of legroom.

Additional upgrades include paddle-shifter-activated regenerative braking, an 11-kW on-board charger (up from 7 kW), and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 driver-assist features. XLE AWD models retain the off-road–capable X-Mode system and Grip Control for low-speed traction. The 2026 bZ rides on Toyota’s dedicated e-TNGA platform with a low center of gravity and reinforced frame around the battery pack.

Toyota says U.S. dealerships will begin receiving the 2026 bZ in the second half of 2025, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.
