2025 IONIQ 5 gains improved battery capacity and Tesla supercharger access

Hyundai has announced the launch of the 2025 IONIQ 5, which includes several updates to the existing model lineup as well as the introduction of a new variant, the IONIQ 5 XRT. The 2025 IONIQ 5 range is set to be the first Hyundai model to be manufactured at the new Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America facility in Georgia. This version offers an improved driving range, increased battery capacity, and access to more charging stations. Hyundai also emphasizes new design elements and technology upgrades in the refreshed lineup.

The IONIQ 5 XRT variant is designed for off-road capability, featuring unique design elements such as digital camouflage cladding, all-terrain tires, and enhanced suspension. This model includes a dual motor setup with all-wheel drive and an 84 kWh battery. The XRT is marketed as a vehicle capable of handling rougher terrains and more adventurous driving conditions, thanks to features such as increased ground clearance and a bolder exterior design.

The 2025 IONIQ 5 models will also be equipped with a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, allowing access to Tesla’s network of over 17,000 Superchargers without the need for an adapter. This port will become standard on all new Hyundai EVs starting in the fourth quarter of 2024. In addition, the vehicle will include a Combined Charging System (CCS) adapter for broader charging compatibility. The availability of the NACS port effectively doubles the number of fast chargers accessible to IONIQ 5 owners.

Several enhancements to the electric power system have been made across the model range. The battery capacity for standard range models has increased from 58 kWh to 63 kWh, while long range models see an increase from 77.4 kWh to 84 kWh. The driving range has also been extended, with the rear-wheel drive SE and SEL trims now targeting over 310 miles.

Hyundai has incorporated a series of updates to the vehicle’s exterior and interior. These include redesigned bumpers, a new rear spoiler, and aerodynamic wheels. The interior features new HVAC controls, a redesigned center console, and updated infotainment technology such as a 12.3-inch display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. In terms of safety, Hyundai has reinforced parts of the vehicle to enhance collision protection and added new driver assistance features like Blind-Spot Collision Warning and Remote Smart Parking Assist.

Hyundai is positioning the IONIQ 5 XRT as a more rugged, capable option within its EV lineup, filling a niche between the standard IONIQ 5 and the high-performance IONIQ 5 N. This new variant is intended to attract customers looking for an electric vehicle that can handle off-road environments while maintaining Hyundai’s focus on innovative design and functionality.

Hyundai expects models built at the Georgia plant to qualify for a $3,750 U.S. tax credit at launch. Future eligibility for additional federal tax credits is anticipated, and leases will continue to qualify for the full $7,500 credit, which Hyundai will pass on to consumers through more competitive lease offers.
