EV 101: Charging a T8-powered Volvo plug-in hybrid

In addition to Volvo‘s growing lineup of fully-electric vehicles, including the XC40 P8 Recharge, the company has plug-in hybrids at the top of the model range.

It’s a smart move to make your high performance models plug-ins, as it prepares the use for future electrification. But how do you take advantage of that ability to plug in and charge?

We can show you how to find free electric vehicle charging near you, but even in doing that, you’ll need to know what type of connector you need to use.

So what type of connector do you need to charge one of the T8 hybrid Volvo models?

You’ll need an SAE J1772 connector. It’s a standard level 2 connector and a charging cable typically comes with a plug-in hybrid. When you are out and about, though, you’ll want to look for level 2 charging.

The battery can be fully charged in as little as 3 hours, depending on the type of power connector and amperage.
